Christopher Phillips

I am a graduate of Yale University (East Asian History and Languages), and I was an editor at The New York Times for 23 years.

My English teaching career began over 30 years ago, during my student days in Taiwan. There I taught at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Diplomatic Training College and other language schools, and I was also a private English tutor.

As a student of 12 languages to various levels, I have many special techniques to help you with your English. My students come from every language group. As an expert on accents, I make good English pronunciation easy and fun! With my years as a newspaper editor and book publisher, I can definitely make you a better writer.

I was born and raised in New York City, where I went to Collegiate School (the oldest school in the United States, founded 1628). I also attended Eton, the historic British boarding school (where the Royal Family sends its sons). My background is very international: I have traveled all over the world and have lived in England, Hong Kong, Israel, Taiwan and Scotland.

Before moving to Florida, my New York teaching practice, LearnEnglish-NY.com, was famous as “The Rolls-Royce of English Classes.” My students included leaders in the arts, business and the professions, United Nations diplomats – and others who just wanted to enjoy American life more. I offer those same world-class standards on the Florida Gulf Coast.

Lessons are either one hour or 1½ hours (strongly recommended). I teach in a quiet, pleasant space near Bahia Vista Street and Beneva Road in Sarasota (Fruitville Exit, Interstate 75). I can also come to your home, for an extra charge.

We begin with a free first meeting. There, I analyze your strengths and difficulties in English – and I learn your own personal goals. Then we make a plan for our work together. I supply most teaching materials free of charge.

For me, it is important that my students enjoy their lessons. They look forward to them as something fun, creative and useful. My years as a teacher, journalist and book publisher have shown me how to get quick and efficient results.

Foreign Language Books

I offer you three ways to save money. If you pay for 10 lessons in advance, you will receive a free extra lesson. If you introduce another student for a free first meeting, you will receive an extra free lesson (whether or not they decide to study). And – if you wish to share your lesson with a friend, there is no extra charge.

Language teaching (just like language learning) is both a skill and an art – and I want you to find both in my classes.

The best way to choose a teacher is to meet them. That’s why I offer a free first meeting.
